United Nations listening to Lakeland Students!

Last week, the United Nations sent Youth Delegate, Lucy Stronach, to LSHS to be part of the largest face-to-face consultation of young people in AUSTRALIA.

The central question was, “What would Australia look like if young people were the key drivers of decision making?” Our students were bursting with contributions towards the discussion. They clearly demonstrated that they have collected well informed thoughts and a mature understanding about the world around them. The significant issues that were raised included:

  • The impacts of social media on young people
  • The global pollution issue
  • Youth mental health
  • The future of education in schools
  • Corporate greed and capitalism
  • Racism
  • Bias in news
  • Sexism

These were the issues identified by our bright students, not the adults in the room.  Massive thanks and top effort to our students for presenting their understanding of the world to one of the world’s biggest institutions that is trying to forge social progress.
