At Lakeland Senior High School, we’re proud to welcome students from around the world through our International Education initiative. Established in response to the growing number of international students, this initiative aims to create a supportive environment that fosters academic success, social integration, and cultural exchange. We’re honoured to have received the WA International Education Initiative of the Year award in 2022 for our outstanding efforts in this program.
Our initiative includes a range of programs such as personalised tutoring sessions, cultural workshops, and community engagement events. The International Student Club meets weekly, offering diverse activities structured across four terms: Understanding Australians, Survival in the Bush, Australian Wildlife, and Cultural Harmony. We encourage parental involvement through events that provide insights into the Australian school system and the Western Australian health system, helping families feel more integrated into our school community. We also have a feedback system through surveys and focus groups, allowing us to adapt the initiative based on student experiences and needs. Additionally, students are paired with local peers once a week, fostering friendships and mentorship.

Academic Support Our international students benefit from tailored tutoring programs that provide individualised assistance, particularly in English language skills. Workshops focused on study techniques and exam preparation are regularly offered through our homework club, helping students adapt to the academic standards in Australia. The support we provide has led to remarkable achievements, including one of our international students receiving the 2024 VET Dux, showcasing the effectiveness of our initiative.
Social Integration We promote social integration through buddy programs, where local students are paired with international students. This fosters friendships and helps international students acclimatise to their new environment. Regular meetings in the International Student Club serve as a platform for students to connect and collaborate, enhancing their social networks and breaking down language barriers.
Cultural Awareness By participating in cultural presentations and festivals, international students have the opportunity to educate their peers about their backgrounds, fostering appreciation and understanding among the entire student body. Events like our 2024 Cultural Day Assembly and Festivities, and excursions to places like the WA Wildlife Centre, enhance students’ understanding of their new environment and enrich our school’s cultural tapestry.
